The Best Self Development Book I Read All Year

Updated: Jun 9, 2023

Can I just start this by saying that I read a lot of books. And as much as I want to say that half of them are self development (self help) and the other half are fun, it's more of a 80/20 going to the self help genre.

So, when I say that this book is the best self development book I've read all year, I'm not trying to click bait you. It is the real deal, and I'm here to tell you why.

So,What is The Book?

It's The Mountain is You by Brianna Wiest...and I've memorized how to write her name correctly because I had to write it soo many times answering people's asking about the book's name every time I showed a page of the book on my instagram stories.

these are just a few of the pages I shared on my social media and every time I would, I'd get a lot of people asking me "what boo is this"

What is it about?

Well, the back of the book says

"this book is about self sabotage, Why we do it, when we do it, and how to stop doing it—for good."

And that's basically it, but with ZERO fluff, along with a 100% value and mind-blowing pages that live in your head rent free, something I thought was only reserved for songs, until I read this book!

What Makes it Different Than Other Self Development Books?

If you read a lot of self-help books you know that a big theme with all of them is that their publishers require that the books have a minimum number of pages in order to be published. Which means that most of the time, they fluff up the books with unnecessary things like too many examples, stories that you could have been fine never reading, repeatedly saying the same thing but in different ways, things like that.

But this one has no such thing.

I swear to you, halfway through the book I realized that I didn't find one incident when I felt that this part of the book was irrelevant, unnecessary or redundant. Actually, there are whole pages of the book that I keep going back to because they are sooo mind blowingly good, that I almost can't believe they exist.

Mind you, I am going through my own healing journey right now, one that I've started years ago. But since mid 2021, I've been seeing a subconscious healer, someone who helps me see what's in my subconscious mind and how it's been controlling 90% of my life.

So, to see someone put into words the things I've been going through, and to write it so eloquently was truly a gift.

But, You Always Say that Perfection is An Illusion?! Is there nothing wrong with this book?

Well, yes, there is no such thing as a perfect book (or perfect anything really.) So, if I had to pinpoint one thing that could have been better about this book is that the way it's written can be perceived slightly (I do mean slightly) as hard to read sometimes. Or maybe it's just my subconscious mind refusing to read certain truths it doesn't want to know!

But I do know that the way Brianna Wiest structures sentences isn't the most "friendly" of structures, it's more of a "professional" tone I guess. Unlike books by Jen Sincero, author of "You're a Badass at Making Money" who you can immediately hear the authors voice in your head, Brianna Wiest doesn't really do that.

Jen Sincero writes in a way that makes you feel your friend is next to you narrating the book to you, and I find that I love that in my self development books. So, I found myself missing that aspect in The Mountain is You, I just felt I was reading a really good fascinating lecture almost, but with zero boring parts hehe.

But again, the book isn't talking about an easy subject. It really opens your mind to the parts of you, you've been keeping hidden deep inside the locked basements of yourself, but she does that so gently that you'll feel that it's okay that you're the mountain you have to climb to go to the other side.

She really helps you see how it will be okay, and not just in the end, but right now, as you're climbing, you'll be okay though it all.

Who is This Book For?

Self sabotage is really how parts of our selves keep us safe from going out of our comfort zones, because it thinks the unknown is scary and we won't be safe there. But the thing is, what lies outside of our comfort zone is our DREAM LIFE...

So, self sabotage is really keeping you from living your dream life.

And if you feel that you are ready to start digging deeper, gaining awareness of your sabotaging behaviors, your limiting beliefs and really start taking charge of your life, to step forward courageously into that life you've always dreamt of...then I'd recommend this book to you.

It won't be like having a coach or subconscious healer with you helping you every step of the way but it will give you the knowledge and some tools of how you can start taking the first steps of your journey.

Bonus thing I love about this book is that Brianna Wiest is actually a Coach (as well as a writer), so to know as a Health Coach that another coach wrote such a wonderful book to help people, really fed into my dream of one day publishing my own book. Even though I always imagined it'd be a fiction novel, maybe I could (with time) add a zero-fluff- self development book to my list of dreams.

If you live in Egypt and want to buy this book, I got it from Diwan. It is not an affiliate link or anything, I'd let you know if it was ^_^

Hope you enjoyed this review, if you did, send it to someone who could benefit from reading The Mountain is You, and you could have helped them take their first step towards a life they dream of.
